2012 Vintage – This was another favourable vintage. There was slightly above average rainfall and then the weather turned warm and dry in January. All varieties were able to proceed at a steady but leisurely pace, to full ripeness. The warmer weather did bring the vintage around 2 weeks earlier. There was an abundant blossoming of Marri leading into and during vintage which kept birds away.
2012 Red Vintage Rating 10/10
Harvest – March 29.
Vinification – The grapes were destemmed and placed in two open fermenters. Innoculated with a neutral yeast and the cap plunged up to four times a day, by hand. After 10 days the wine was drained and the must basket pressed off to tank where it underwent a malolactic fermentation which softens the acid. The wine was then racked to a mix of 50% new and 50% one and two year old French barriques, then left to mature for 12 months. Blended and bottled in August 2013.

Tasting Notes – Cape Grace’s flagship wine. Lifted aromatics, very floral cassis/blackcurrant with notes of dark plum and red currant fruits, touch of cigar box / cedar from the oak . Briary blackcurrant mix on the palate, hints of mocha, firm but pleasant tannins, medium/full body red, red berry acidity that leads to a long soft finish. Will age 10+ years.

“This is a beautiful and complete cabernet displaying the best of this superb vineyard. Leafy tobacco with a trace of traditional blackcurrant on the nose. The palate is sublime. It’s smooth and seamlessly constructed but there is structure and intensity held with precise focus through to the finish. Lovely chewy palate offers so much. 94 /100 Ray Jordan
